The Story Behind the Sign

The Legacy of V.I.P. Records

V.I.P. Records is more than a record store. It represents family, entrepreneurship, music discovery, local artists, and a community gathering place connected to Southern California music culture.

From records and in-store performances to a recording space and an iconic sign, V.I.P. Records created a place where music and community came together.
1967 · The Family Foundation

Cletus Anderson Establishes V.I.P. Records

Cletus Anderson moved from Mississippi to California in 1967 and opened a record store in South Central Los Angeles. The store became a community hub for music lovers.

Customers gathered around R&B, gospel, jazz, reggae, blues, and many other sounds. The business later expanded, creating a foundation for the family’s future.

1978 · Long Beach

Kelvin Anderson Opens a New Chapter

Community and Local Talent

A Gathering Place and Stage

In-store performances gave local musicians a platform to share their work and connect with audiences. The store became a cultural space as well as a place to buy music.

The 1990s · Recording Studio

Helping Artists Find Their Sound

Kelvin Anderson turned a small back room into a recording studio. Snoop Dogg, Warren G, and Nate Dogg recorded early demos there. Their connection to the store is part of the story of 213 and West Coast hip-hop history.
